Belief Not Talent is Lacking in New Zealand Tennis

What an impressive first set by local tennis player Michael Venus yesterday against Tommy Robredo in the Heineken Open.  This event is New Zealand’s annual ATP tour event attracting some of the world’s top tennis players.

Michael Venus played much of the first set looking like he could be a top 10 world ranked player. He certainly has the technical ability to achieve that if he can muster the self belief, the critical part of the top two inches.  The reality is that it is our deep seated unconscious beliefs that restricts or creates our performance.  In his case he did not really believe he could win.  This was illustrated by the way he jumped in the air wildly celebrating after winning the first set. At that point his match was over.  He had achieved his goal.  It was then very difficult to get back ‘in the zone’ as shown by the result.  If he really believed he could win, he would not have been so exciting by winning just one set.  He would have been happy sure but knowing he still had much more to do.

Rubin Statham was similar yesterday, he won one set against a good opponent but the reality is while he had the desire, drive and hope at a conscious level, it is our unconscious stuff that creates our performance.  Hence he lost in 3 sets.

Sasha Jones is another example of a great NZ talent; she has the game to be a top 50 player.  Like Michael Venus she has the ability to be one of NZ’s greatest players but the real question is does she have the top two inches.  I will reserve my opinion as I do not know how much focus and commitment both have on doing off court work on developing the top two inches.  Can they both make it to the top? Of course they can but will they do it?  Well only time and those two inches will tell.

The other annoying misconception the commentators have on the way Micheal Venus lost is that he needed more experience to be competitive at this level.  That of course is partly true, it helps of course but it is also not the experience that he needed in-order to win, he needed the self belief he could really do it!  This can certianly come from experience but only if this experience is positive experience.   The key point is you do not need the experience to gain the self belief. You can develop the belief with off court mental skills training.

An example of having the belief without the experience is Marus Daniel at this same event last year.  The key is belief and expecting deep down at the subconscious and unconscious levels you can win.  Another example of  strong self belief was Martina Hingis when she won her first grand slam at aged 15.  She had the belief she could do it and expected nothing other that success.

Top tennis players practice sometimes 6 hours a day and how much of that time is specific to building the top two inches?  Well you probably know the answer to that. Most players very little which seems crazy when you could estimate that 80% of their performance is determined by the top two inches.

The state of NZ tennis is not the lack of talent and ability it is the lack of true self belief.  You can only ever perform as well as you truly belief at a deep unconscious level.  So NZ tennis need to focus on the inner confidence and self belief to build the next generation of champions.

Some people start their sports career with that belief, Hingis, Riche McCaw and Dan Carter for  example, others like Rat Rafter develope this belief as they mature. Rafter never was a top ranked junior in Australia yet matured to be one of the best. It can be done but not by focusing on technique only. The balance is different for all players but the principle is universal.  If you don’t fully believe you can do it, you will not, under pressure you will tighten up and fail.

Make a commitment today to creating your goals and get ‘in the zone.’

Follow Your Heart

I find this video inspirational from David McPhail, a legend of New Zealand entertainment.

To achieve peak sports performance to be ‘in the zone’ it’s our emotions that underlie all performance.  Our emotions are the link to our deep unconscious programing.  The 4 Zone Model explains this and how you can more consistently get ‘in the zone’ by integrating the 3 core zones.  See www.4zonemodel.com for more details.

The 4 Zone Model can apply to any aspect of life.  Often we may have a conflict with what society expects and what our mind is saying, yet if we follow our heart then this is when true happiness and magic can occur.  Living in the flow living in-tune is about being emotionaly authentic and aware.  Living in the moment aware of our emotions to be ‘in the zone!’

Being ‘In The Zone’ to earn $1.8m Prize Money

A great example of being ‘In The Zone’ was the winning of the Bristish Open this weekend.  Louis Oosthuizen earned a cool $1.8m in prize money.  Not bad for an unknwon 25 year-old South African.

A key to his success was looking down at the red dot stenciled on his glove.  This routine helped him settle his mind to find the inner calm of peak performance.  To read more see an article in a NZ Sunday Paper.

Listen not think

The sun was shining today what a great day out in the country.  Finally summer at last I was thinking what a joy to be alive.  Then as I drove along I thought I must call a colleague and then my  mind said no, this is not necessary and gave me a number of excuses why not.

Then that very person called me wondering where I was!!  I had been expected at their place but not with a fixed time.  I had an immediate negative feeling as I felt I had let them down. They had now chased me, all because I did no listen to my feelings, my mind dominated that moment in time.

Looking back now it is very clear the game my mind played.  In more recent times in life, I  will often recognize that it is the mind so that I can follow the feeling.  The feeling or intuition is normally more accurate, able to do the right thing, rather than  let the mind dominate based on logic and its knowledge.   The mind is great at interpreting and analyzing yet normally it is the intuition that is the most accurate source of decision making and self help.

I believe everything happens for a reason, so today was to teach me another lesson and today it was the ongoing point to stay awake in the moment, observing the mind as it argues with the feeling or hunch. Awake to then do what I feel is needed that moment in time.   This is the magic of the present we call NOW!

Goals or no goals living free

A coaching client said to me that over the holiday period they wished to stay in the moment rather than review and adjust their Map forward in life, their MotiveMap.

The power of now, living in the moment is an area I love working with people on to awaken the current moment from the mental processing of looking ahead and back in time.  The key here is to stay in the moment open and detached from your Map outcomes.  Then review and change this MotiveMap each day based on feelings, learning to trust your instinct’s to more accurately guide you forward.  Without a Map listing our intentions, which are very similar to goals, we can drift without a mechanism to inspire our passion and keep ourselves accountable living our dreams.

Having a clear path forward, while staying open to change constantly adjusting your Map based on feel, provides a sense of clarity in the moment.  Feeling clear and together, without the mental clutter, helps create the foundation of self belief to heighten the power of the moment and sense of trust.

Tune into the power of intention to inspire the MotiveMap path of greater energy to achieve more each day driven by the fire inside that we call the power of passion burning bright to awaken us from the inside.

Life should flow with ease

Life is supposed to flow with ease and joy when you are on track and doing what you enjoy.  Gone are the old days with the mindset that life should be tough!

Deepak Chorpra describes this flow in his book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. The fourth law is the THE LAW OF LEAST EFFORT.  A key to being fully satisfied in life is to be living on track in the flow, the flow is the effortless joy of life when on track, ‘In The Zone.’

For many people a key determinate of this is their level of career satisfaction.  If you are in a career that you find stimulating and satisfying then life tends to flow with ease and more positives occur along the path we call life.

During the last 2 months the flow of life has taken a new level of ease for me.  An example of the flow is a few days ago I ran the Auckland Half Marathon.  In the build up to this event I realized I needed new running shoes.  As I had been the business mentor for the owner of a prominent chain of sports shoe shops, I thought I must contact him to see if he can offer me another special deal.  Then a couple of days latter on my run who do I meet on the street?  Yes a very random and unlikely coincidence it was.  What is the chance of running along in Auckland and seeing this person?  So after a chat I purchased new running shoes feeling very happy with how the flow had yet again helped my path in life.

This is just one example of the flow assisting me each day.  Some people describe this as good luck, they may say that a certain person always has good luck, yet I believe you make your own luck if you take full responsibility for the process that creates the flow.

In Deepak’s book he describes this synchronicity, these supposed random meetings, as a correlation of improbabilities.  While logic would suggest they are improbable, they happen constantly and consistently when you are in the flow to provide the messages you require.  This flow is occurring for many people that are awake enough and aware, who take full responsibility for the change necessary to keep them on track and in the flow.

Proactively making it happen is about plotting the SuccessMap to the future we truly desire.   A by product of this flow and being on track in life is the certainty of focus and excitement that naturally will flow, knowing you are on track along the personal path or map forward in life.  Greater self belief and certainty are natural by products of being in the flow.
